RMIT University can trace its history back for more than a century,
when it opened as the Working Men's College. In 1960 the name Royal Melbourne
Institute of Technology was adopted. It was not until 1992 that it was granted
the status of University. In the late 1990s RMIT University had almost 50,000
students, it is still based in Melbourne but has established campuses outside
the city centre as well as overseas.
